It just struck me how excellent this black background is for tasty images. By pure accident it seems to invite the multimodal. You can upload, store and share your images on Flickr for no charge at all.

what a beautiful image - those silks cry out for being touched ... the feeling [haptic] eye which explores as if touching... there's a wonderful poem by Grace Nicholls about how to look at a picture - anyone know the title?

I've been preoccupied with English 21 - e-Engish stuff.. very keen to get other people involved so do look at UKLA website for links to it...

Well, since multimodal matters has been a little...how should I say...slow, of late, I thought I'd add some new material. The SIG is probably still mulling over Eve's paper or else developing fabulous new multimodal work, but keeping it under wraps. I wonder.

Taking a traditional print-based text, this guy Krazydad re-models 'I have a dream' as a multi-coloured digital mosaic. I find it interesting because he's using the visual affordances of new media to revise the familiar. It's probably too small to read here, but you can visit his image bank through this link and view larger versions.

I've sent the notes and the redraft of the discussion doc to be circulated - wonder if we should ask publications if our discussion doc should be multimodal so that we might include one or two images and invite folk to comment... what d'you think?

Well, this is a single slide from a show on 'Special People' created by Year 4 and Year 5 children. Leaving aside, for the moment, Eve's comments about a whole presentation, what do we make of this? How do we describe the use of colour and image - and how do these work alongside the verbal text?

Here's Eve and Sue, and you've got to admit that it looks as if multimodal collaboration is fun! I've always believed that the best work flows out of playful interaction. If I'm right, this looks promising...and that's only one reading of this text!

today's meeting

hello blogmates - hope you all got home safely and if you went to the exhibition it was good... and the concernt... and hope the Barnsley trains were on time and the Strathclyde aeroplane ditto...

I really enjoyed that meeting - I think it's exciting... and thinking about what everyone is proposing to do, there's a lovely tapestry of ideas that fit together beautifully. It struck me, too, just as we were packing up, [of course!] that a nice shift is to describe a whole picturebook or powerpoint text. It's not the same as describing a single page or even double page spread - or is it? The text cohesion is likely to be carried by images and words working together in a slightly different way from a displayed page as we showed it in More than Words. We'll see... [oops no pun intended]

I won't have a chance to sort out SuperSue's 'story' til the weekend at best, but I'll email it to you next week somehow.
